The royal Horticultural Society has embarked on a fresh round of redundancies, pruning out directors and high-profile managers.

It comes just weeks after new RHS director-general Sue Biggs said: “I’m well placed to say that morale is great within the RHS. We are all facing forwards to an exciting new future.”

The surprise ‘restructuring’ effects eight management posts from the Society’s 751-strong workforce. Casualties include director of science and learning Simon Thornton-Wood, commercial director Gordon Seabright and finance director Sarah Buxton.

Sue said: “I am sorry to be saying goodbye to staff who have made tremendously valuable contributions, but this restructure is essential for the future of the RHS.”

The shake-up will see the RHS divided up into seven “core pillars”. They are gardens, retail, shows, horticulture, ‘members, art and media,’ science and ‘community and development’.

This move, claims the RHS, which is based in London (left) will “reduce bureaucracy and increase clarity of purpose.”

Gardening expert Peter Seabrook said: “If the axe falling at the top releases more money for gardeners then that must be a good thing.

“I hope it brings a switch away from environment matters and wildlife, and brings a greater emphasis back on gardening,” Peter added.

Other posts to be cut include head of publishing and policy manager. Two senior roles will merge on The Garden journal.
