Creating bird food stars is an easy activity for the younger ones, and makes a nice gift for any bird lover.

You’ll need:

  • 1 sachet gelatine
  • 200g bird seed
  • 140ml / ¼ pint hot water
  • Cookie cutters
  • Drinking straw
  • Ribbon

Dissolve gelatine in hot water, and mix into the seed so that it is thoroughly coated. We made our gelatine mixture 4 times the strength as described on the packet so the seed would set hard.

Press the mixture firmly into cookie cutter moulds on grease proof paper, and add a piece of drinking straw – this will create a hole.

Leave in a cool place to set overnight. Remove the mould and the straw, then thread with ribbon.

This is the perfect activity for a raining day and the children will see the results in next to no time.

Plus you don’t have to make a star you could choose any mould shape, just take a look online or in your local craft shop for inspiration.

Here at Amateur Gardening we love to see all your creations and hear your stories – so why not take a picture of your bird food star and send it to us by email: amateurgardening@timeinc.com
