Sowing sunflower seeds is great for toddlers because the seeds and seedlings are large enough to handle and there are many varieties to choose from.

We have planted ‘Russian Giant’ which could grow up to 10ft (3m) tall.

We put three seeds into one 3in (7.5cm) pot of seed compost, watered it and kept it on the windowsill under a home made cloche made from half an empty squash bottle.. We will plant out the young plants when all risk of frost has passed, but sunflower seeds can be sown outdoors where they are to flower during May and June.
