A once dreary alleyway that was given a makeover by green-fingered residents has won the top award in a national competition championed by a TV gardener.
Annie Street in Salford triumphed in the Cultivation Street 2014 competition, backed by David Domoney, who co-presents Love Your Garden on ITV with Alan Titchmarsh.
Residents in Annie Street do not have front gardens; just a concrete alley.
But locals started planting up the space outside their homes – adopting the passageway and turning it into a giant garden.
As well as planters, raised beds, pots and hanging baskets, residents have installed metal arches, recycled objects and water features.
The street won £10,000 worth of National Garden Gift Vouchers. David Domoney told AG: “This is the second year of the competition and entries really upped their game. We saw some stunning gardens.
“At Annie Street, residents pulled together to create something spectacular.”
Resident Karen Pearson said: “We do it because we love gardening. We are just as enthusiastic about our alleyway as other people are about their front gardens.”
