Gardening has been knocked off pole position as the nation’s favourite hobby, a survey claims.
Cooking is now the UK’s top pastime, according to a poll of 1,000 people by internet price comparison site Pricerunner.co.uk.
Inspired by TV cooking shows, the UK has turned into a nation of foodies, the probe suggested.
But gardening still fared well, taking second position. Nearly half (41 per cent) of people said they tended gardens in their spare time.
Just over half (51 per cent) of Brits had been gardening for over 10 years, spending an average of £1,546 – that’s over £4 per day – on their plots.
The survey, however, challenged the widespread belief that growing-your-own can cut the cost of living during in tough times.
Only five per cent of the nation believed they can put enough time into gardening to actually save money.
But proving how addictive gardening is, only one per cent of people had tried gardening just once, with just seven per cent sticking with it for just one month before giving up.
