Thorncroft Clematis in Norwich has taken the wraps off a new hardy and prolific-flowering clematis called ‘Astra Nova’

It has semi-double, violet-purple flowers with white stripes.

The nursery’s owners first saw the bloom when visiting clematis-breeding friends in Holland.

‘Astra Nova’ is part of the viticella group. Flowering between June and September, the deciduous climber is classed as hardy and is said to thrive in partial shade or sun.

A nursery spokesman said: “It will reach up to 8.2 ft (2.5m) in the garden but will remain more compact if planted in pots.”

The nursery had a very limited stock of the clematis available as AG went to press, priced at £14.50 plus P&P.
