Brothers Ian and Stuart Paton have smashed the UK giant pumpkin record for the ninth time.
The Hampshire brothers’ 1,884lb bruiser, which had a circumference of over 17ft (5.2m), piled on 35lb a day during its peak period of growth.
Ian and Stuart, of Pine Tops Nursery, nourished the pumpkin with rich fertiliser, and supplied 100 gallons of water per day. Its final weight was just 218lb off the world record.
The brothers, who won a £1,000 prize for breaking the record at the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s Autumn Pumpkin Festival last month, reclaimed their title from Dorset farmer Mark Baggs.
Stuart said the brothers (pictured with Thompson & Morgan boss Paul Hansord, centre) were confident of getting the world title and are installing a new greenhouse for 2015 on better soil with twice the amount of growing space.
Show sponsor Thompson & Morgan sells the giant pumpkin seed under the name ‘Paton Twins Giant,’ to mark the efforts of the brothers.
It costs £9.99 for two huge seeds. www.thompson-morgan.com/giant-pumpkin for more details on the seed.
