David, managing director of The Outdoor Room in West Sussex, has designed and built 14 TV gardens over the last two series, under the watchful eye of presenters Alan Titchmarsh and David Domoney.
But David said he had turned ITV down for a third series after being asked to build six gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show next May – and agreeing to do three.
However David (pictured with Alan), who was watched by 3.6million people on ITV this summer, took a dig at TV gardening.
He explained: “I’ve said for years that TV still doesn’t seem to get gardening.
“Most programmes still over-simplify the process of designing and building a garden.
“How can something that takes weeks, months or even years become condensed into a half-hour or hour-long entertainment show?”
Despite his critique, David was full of praise for Alan Titchmarsh.
He said: “Alan was terrific to work with. He grafts, even when not on camera. He is a proper gardener and listens to other people’s ideas.”
