There have been a few under performing plants in my garden this season thanks to the deluge we’ve received this year, but one display I’m proud to show off this week is my vertical wall planter filled with Begonia ‘Non Stop Mix’ below a row of trailing Begonia ‘Citrus Shades’.

Grown from plugs, they were slow to start, but in the past few weeks they have filled out and put on many blooms. They just seem to love the weather this summer. My display only receives a little direct sunlight early in the morning, but this has been perfect for them. If you have a shady spot that needs brightening up I’d recommend begonias every time.

In open ground, the usual advice is to lift begonia tubers at the end of the season but I have a plant that has been left in the ground for the past three years and despite heavy snow and prolonged frosts during winter, it has re-emerged each year in late spring and at this time of year is soon to flower.

It’s not too late to set the garden up for a late summer show. I popped into my local garden centre and Homebase store this week to see trays of plants, as well as larger potted specimens (including begonias) being sold off at half price. So grab yourself a bargain this weekend and get the garden set for next week’s sunny spell.
