Our Amateur Gardening expert shows you how to force bulbs in winter. The bulb we chose was narcissus, this was chosen due to the amazing scent. The best time of year to force a bulb indoors is anytime from Sept – Jan.
First start by picking a container. You will also need some bulb planting compost.
Fill the container 2/3 full with the bulb planting compost. Water this compost in the container.
Then set the bulbs in the container – making sure they do not touch each other.
Fill the pot will container, leave about 1-2 cm rim at the top but make sure you have the tips of the bulbs peaking out the top.
Water the container. If you have a container without drainage you will need to tip the pot to remove any excess water.
You will now need to leave the container for 8 weeks preferably in a dark cold place. Do make sure you keep checking the pot during the 8 weeks as it may need watering.
Once the 8 weeks is up bring the container indoors and place in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
